viii.

Amy bolted into her former bedroom, whizzed right past Zara, and into the bathroom, where she pitched over the toilet bowl and vomited uncontrollably. She flushed the toilet and looked weakly at Zara, who stood in the doorway.

“You okay?” Zara asked.

“Must’ve been something I ate,” Amy said, thinking of the toasted sardine sandwich she’d had for breakfast, not that a toasted sardine sandwich was her usual breakfast, but it seemed a good idea at the time.

“I don’t think so,” Zara said.

“What?”

Zara looked pointedly at her belly.

Amy rifled through the bathroom cabinets for a home pregnancy test. About six months ago, she’d been late, and had texted Brad to bring home a test. Brad being Brad decided to be thorough and brought home a stack—enough to test a private girls’ school. Now, Amy found one, peed on the stick and waited anxiously, while Zara swayed in the bathroom door, melancholy on her face.

“I would’ve liked to share this with you,” she said.

Amy looked at the test. It had come up blue, which meant only one thing.

“You will,” she told Zara.

Brad was ecstatic, and as the builders worked on his and Amy’s new bedroom, he worked on another for the baby, putting up gender neutral pastel lime wallpaper, assembling a crib, and a butterfly mobile. His child-like enthusiasm and delight enamoured Amy, and for the first time since Zara had died, Amy entertained—just entertained, and no more—thoughts of her life ahead.
